My Kinda Town – Chicago πŸŽΆ

This is my kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of people too
People who smile at you
And each time I roam, Chicago is
Calling me home, Chicago is
Why I just grin like a clown
It’s my kind of town

🎢

Please tell me that you know what song I am referring to! I mean, you should because it’s by the one and only FRANK SINATRA. Gosh I love him!

Anywho, if you all cannot tell by the lyrics above, I am in Chicago!! Ian is here for a conference and seeing that my company has a flexible work environment, I am working remotely for the week. Being originally from Chicago and having my entire family here in Chicago made this opportunity one that I simply could not pass up. I rarely get to see my family, so I am SO happy to get to spend time with them this week. I love my family πŸ’—

So, grab yourself a cup of coffee (or tea), turn on some Frank Sinatra, and let’s chat!

Sunday morning Ian and I woke up and headed to the airport.. only to discover that our flight had been delayed for three hours. We had eaten breakfast earlier that morning so we weren’t very hungry yet. After looking around PDX’s shops (which are awesome by the way), we stopped by Deschutes (in the airport of course πŸ˜‰ ) and plopped ourselves down next to the cozy fireplace.

I always feel funny sitting in restaurants or cafes without ordering something, so the two of us decided to order a beer while we waited an additional three hours for our flight. Wanting to be productive during this time, I decided to work on the Travel section of this site. There is still a lot for me to do in this section, but I did manage to complete two sections: Sunnyvale, CA and Libertyville, IL. Feel free to check them out and/or add any comments to them if I forgot anywhere that you feel I should recommend.

After a total of 5 hours of waiting for our flight, our airplane finally arrived at its gate. People rushed out of the airplane and shortly after everyone had exited the aircraft, its flight attendants hastily headed away from the aircraft and towards the shopping area of PDX Airport. Ian and I were standing at the check in counter asking to move our seats next to one another when we noticed a man waving his arms running after the two stewardesses. “Wait!” he exclaimed! The women continued marching forward. Another man standing near the gate decided to jump in as well, “hey! Where are you two going? We are nearly three hours behind schedule! Please get back on the aircraft!”. The women turned and with a huff, exclaimed that they had been on that aircraft way too long and were off to get coffee. The man running after them had a bag in his hands – which turned out to be coffee that he had gotten for them. They didn’t want his coffee however, so they continued on their way.

Ian and I just stood there befuddled. What the heck was going on?

The man standing next to the gate, shook his head and complained to the girl working the gate’s desk, “can you believe that? Unbelievable.”

He picked up the overhead microphone and began his announcement to the room of people waiting to board their flight.

“Well everyone, the cleaning crew should be wrapping up now. However, we are unable to begin boarding because your flight attendants decided that they want to grab coffee. So until they return, we will not begin boarding at this time.”

At that moment, the entire room began laughing and everyone simultaneously seemed to shake their heads.

Eventually, the flight attendants returned. In all honesty, I really didn’t mind that they wanted to take a moment to get themselves some coffee. I mean, come on, they were in Portland (the best place to get coffee πŸ˜‰) and I am sure that they had been trapped in that aircraft for at least 5 or 6 hours. I don’t blame them, I would have fled from the aircraft as well. However, I would not have treated the employees of the PDX airport as rudely as they did.

Well, long story short.. the flight attendant and a passenger sitting in front of Ian got into a bit of a squabble and it was so uncomfortable. In fact, I felt pretty uncomfortable for the remainder of the 4 hour flight. While I can sympathize with both the flight attendant and grump man, I can’t help but feel that American Airlines may not be the airline for me anymore. Flights are stressful enough for people.. and causing a scene as an airline employee and having all of the other crew members join in is both unprofessional and distasteful.

On the brightside, I am here in Chicago and the flight is over 😊

Monday morning, Ian and I woke up and headed to Panera bread to grab a bite before cracking our laptops open for work. We both worked remotely at my Aunt and Uncle’s home before heading out to our hotel for part of the week. I couldn’t get over how beautiful it was outside that morning 😊Sometimes I miss Chicago snow.. and other times I remember how much I hated it.

We stayed at the Swissotel and were smack dab in the middle of the city. It was wonderful, and so was the view from our window!

Later that evening, Ian met up with a few of his colleagues for dinner before beginning their conference the next morning, so I spent my evening catching up with my aunt and uncle over dinner and ice cream πŸ™‚

Having last been to Penny’s Noodle Shop in high school.. or maybe even junior high, my aunt and uncle wanted to take me back there for dinner. Wanting a classic dish, I opted for the good ol’ Pad Thai (shown in the image above). And wow. It was everything I remembered. SO GOOD.

LRM_EXPORT_64418056995412_20190218_235622168.jpegMy aunt ordered their Hot Pepper Noodle and wow was it good. I may have stolen a noodle or two πŸ˜‰

After dinner, we walked a few blocks or so to Oberweis for some good ol’ Midwest ice cream. As a kid, I remember being excited over the glass milk bottles that my mom would buy from them from time to time. I don’t know if the glass is what made that milk taste so good, or if it was how fresh the milk was, but I have been a fan since I can remember.

That being said, my aunt and uncle knew how excited I would be to make a stop over at Oberweis for a treat. They were right, I was pretty darn excited.

Being full from dinner, we all decided to order kid scoops – which happened to be quite generous in size if you ask me. I ordered their mint chocolate chip ice cream, as I usually do, my aunt ordered their featured honey butter cashew (which was absolutely delicious) and my uncle went with their pistachio.. which was also really good. Who knows, maybe next time I am back I will switch things up and order their pistachio ice cream!

After dinner and ice cream, my aunt and uncle dropped me off at my hotel. Exhausted from working, traveling, and eating delicious food, I was ready to sleep.

Ian and I then woke up early this morning and parted ways. Ian headed out to his conference and I headed to Dunkin Donuts. Ahh how sweet life is!

LRM_EXPORT_92890119474724_20190219_091212131.jpeg

I haven’t had Dunkin Donuts for at least a year.. or maybe two.. so I was very excited to get my hands on an iced coffee and breakfast sandwich. I probably would have treated myself to a donut if I didn’t have plans to eat all of my favorite foods while home in Chicago. I also have been trying to eat healthier, especially now that some foods no longer agree with me. Ahh aging sure is fun.

After work, I met up with one of my coworkers from Chicago. We have been working on a project together for a few months now but had never met in person before tonight. My company has employees in nearly every state, if not all states in the US and a few international employees (well contractors), which is one of my favorite things about my company! You can meet up with coworkers anywhere you go and everyone is so friendly 😊

Seeing that a Broken English Taco Pub was near my hotel, my coworker suggested meeting up there and I was more than down. This past October I visited a Broken English in Old Town for my birthday and had an incredible time there with my family (post on it here)!

When it came to order, we both realized that we had made it in for Taco Tuesday.. which meant $2 tacos. Yeah, you heard me. $2 tacos. You bet we tried as many of them as we could! By the end of dinner we were stuffed!

After chatting away for what seemed to be an hour, we realized that 3 hours had gone by and it was time to part ways. And now, here I am writing you all, half asleep and content from all the tacos in my belly. Oh how I love tacos.

Anyway, I can’t wait to share more of my Chicago adventures with you all. I have a very busy 2 weeks coming up, so I hope that I have enough energy to keep writing on here!

Talk soon,

~ Britt

Questions for you:

  • Do you have a favorite airline?
  • Any crazy airline stories?
  • Favorite ice cream flavor?

  1. Great times make great memories! Looks like you had a great time in Chi-town! I can’t think of airline horror stories, but just recently I was booked on a late night flight coming home and my airline just cancelled it. That was pretty dumb on their part, United!
My favorite ice cream flavor hmmm, I like a good French vanilla. But if you want any other flavor besides vanilla, I like green tea, cookie dough, Black Forest and/or salted caramel! Yum!
